“Dongding” is a geographic location in Nantou, Taiwan, situated in Dongding Lane in the present-day village of Lugu, Qilin Lake, and near Dongding Mountain. It is said that the name “Dongding” originated from the hardships endured by early settlers who were often impoverished and lacked footwear, resulting in the need to climb to the mountaintop with frozen toes during harsh winter weather. The tea produced in Dongding is primarily derived from the Qingxin Oolong cultivar and undergoes a semi-fermentation process to achieve its distinct flavor and aroma, resulting in its status as a celebrated and esteemed representative of high-quality Taiwanese tea.
The tea-making process involves a unique post-drying step where the tea leaves are repeatedly rolled into small balls using cloth bags, resulting in a semi-fermented, ball-shaped tea referred to as “cloth-rolled tea” or “hot-formed tea.” The Oolong tea produced by this method in the Dongding region possesses a luxurious and well-rounded taste, accompanied by a distinctive roasted aroma and a robust and lingering aftertaste, which has garnered it the esteemed reputation of being deemed “the Holy Grail of Taiwanese tea” and a distinguished representative of high-quality Oolong tea.
